My Word for the New Year
My sweet friend Liz (check out her wonderful blog here!) shared a link to the blog of Christine Kane, who writes about her perspective regarding New Years resolutions (see her blog here and scroll down to read "you say you want a resolution". Her approach is to choose a single word to focus on and hold in your thoughts and actions throughout the year.
It took all of 3 seconds for a word to come to mind for me... "persevere"...and once I read the dictionary's definition, I knew I had chosen the right word.
Since I am doing a fair amount of "couch potato" activity while I am recovering, I took out my brand spanking new set of Neocolor crayons and black Castell pens and went to town. The little girl is an image from a vintage photo - the rest is drawn. If you have never used these water-coluble crayons before, I encourage you to give them a try. So much fun!! And I ended up with something that is as close to a journaling page as I have ever come... there IS hope for me yet!

Don't you just love those Neocolor water-soluble crayons! They are amazing and so versatile! Whenever I go to the art supply store I never fail to visit the Neocolor crayon section, and I never fail to buy at least a couple of them, even if I already have that color! :-D
Have you tried the metallic ones?
This is a wonderful piece Deb and I love how you incorporated an image with your own art. I LOVE water-soluble pastels and have one small and one large set of the Neocolors and a set of the Portfolio ones as well (they are thicker but quite wonderful).
I think my word for the new year may be "patience".
I know you are having this illness sort of side line you right now so I am sending you strong healing thoughts!

i love this piece. i like the swirling pattern behind, and the expression on her little face is very interesting! and i love the idea of a one-word goal for the year. the whole negativity part of resolutions...i like focusing on what is right!
I love this piece. Such beautiful work and great detail. I LOVE those crayons and use them in about 80% of my work. A little 'here and there' can be a good thing! My secret (Although it's not really a secret, because I tell everyone lol) is to use a little spit mixed with the crayon. Much better than water!
And I like the word you chose. I am a glass-half-full kind of girl so a few words that come to mind for me are, 'succeed' 'genuine' 'integrity'.

WOW!!! This looks great Deb! I am not one to pick up a pen and go to town, but this is very inspiring. I love the colors. Must get those crayons for sure.
I love the colors and the way you've incorporated your focus-word into this piece.
My word for the year would be re-vision. I am undergoing a lot of changes that have required me to look at things differently, including myself, and to imagine a different life for myself than the one I've led for many years.
I am recovering, too, and not nearly as patiently as I would like. At least you are creating some fantastic art during this process! I wish you Godspeed in your healing, Deb.
Amazing magical piece of art! I had no idea that you were recovering from anything! Where the heck have I been!? I am so sorry that just sucks! Although - really the art you are doing during this is awesome. Really. . .stunning. I love the shading in your watercolors as well. The colors are just so perfectly balanced.
